Case Study: Winnebago Industries
Customer Profile:
Winnebago Industries, Inc., is the leading U.S. manufacturer of motor homes. These self-contained recreation vehicles are used primarily in leisure travel and outdoor recreation activities. Winnebago Industries builds quality motor homes with state-of-the-art computer-aided design and manufacturing systems on automotive-styled assembly lines.
Challenge:
Winnebago Industries is committed to the safety of its employees. Licensed forklift drivers are required to receive training when they are hired, at regular intervals thereafter, and every time they are involved in an incident that involves forklift safety to maintain their license. As a result, trainers spent a significant amount of time administering training classes and grading tests. In addition, learning styles differed significantly amongst employees. Winnebago Industries needed a more efficient way to track and score training courses, as well as provide consistent training that reached all forklift drivers, no matter their learning style.
Strategy:
Winnebago Industries chose Phasient Learning Technologies to develop an innovative and consistent forklift training program.
Process:
Phasient attended one of Winnebago Industries' classroom training sessions to understand the key points of the course content and meet Winnebago Industries' learners. At the session, Phasient collected all necessary materials to begin the script writing process. Phasient also worked with a video vendor to incorporate clips from Winnebago Industries' safety video into the eLearning course. Regular reviews of the work occurred throughout the development process. Winnebago Industries' trainers were impressed with the process and how Phasient project managers were able to understand and interpret the nuances of the subject and the needs of the learners without ever driving a forklift.
Results:
After six weeks, the final revisions were completed and the final product was unveiled to a portion of Winnebago Industries' forklift drivers. The training provided consistent information to all learners - both first-time and sophisticated computer users. In addition, Phasient developed features that allowed learners the option of receiving assistance by replaying individual pages and having test questions and answers read aloud. Tests were automatically graded and scores were reported to the learning management system, which significantly reduced the time spent on tracking and grading courses.
"Phasient had a feel for what would work and what wouldn't for our company."
- Michelle Bendickson, Training Administrator, Winnebago
